Accessible Science Workshop at IIC

August 8, 2025

Vision Empower (VE), in collaboration with NAB IndiaSightsavers India, and the SSEPD Department, Government of Odisha, organized a two-day Accessible Science Workshop on 7th and 8th August 2025, which focused on advancing inclusivity in STEM education. The workshop brought together educators, experts, and innovators committed to creating classrooms where science is accessible to all learners.

Over the course of two days, the VE team demonstrated a series of adapted physics experiments designed to make abstract concepts tangible and understandable for students with visual impairment. In addition, a dedicated life science session on the digestive system used tactile models and hands-on exploration, allowing participants to experience how such methods can bring lessons to life. The sessions also highlighted the use of assistive technologies such as IRIS and Hexis, showcasing how these tools can integrate into classrooms to bridge learning gaps.

The workshop saw the enthusiastic participation of 36 science teachers from 27 special schools across Odisha, all of whom actively engaged in learning and sharing. Their passion underscored the importance of equipping teachers with the skills and resources needed to make science education inclusive and impactful.

A special highlight of the event was the presence of Ms. Shizuko Hamada from Japan, who shared her expertise in accessible chemistry education. Her insights and international perspective added immense value, inspiring both facilitators and teachers to adopt innovative strategies in their own classrooms.

The program concluded with a collective commitment to building a future where science is for everyone. By blending tactile learning, adapted experiments, and cutting-edge assistive technologies, the workshop marked a significant step forward in reimagining STEM education as a truly inclusive space.
