Kolkata, 21st June 2025
In a landmark step toward inclusive education, Vision Empower, in collaboration with Cognizant Foundation, inaugurated the first-ever Accessible Science Lab at Lighthouse for the Blind School, Kolkata. This initiative marks a significant milestone in making STEM education accessible for students with visual impairment, reinforcing the commitment to equitable and inclusive education opportunities for all.

The inauguration was graced by Ms. Mrinal Sharma and Ms. Pamela Mitra from the Cognizant Leadership Team, along with Ms. Asthaa Sarma from Cognizant Foundation, MLA Shri Debasis Kumar, the President of Lighthouse for the Blind School. The ceremony commenced with a ribbon cutting, followed by a tree-planting activity to commemorate the occasion.
Under this impactful partnership, Cognizant Foundation supports 43 special schools across India — with 10 in West Bengal, 12 in Kerala, and 21 in Tamil Nadu — driving the mission to make education more accessible.

One of the highlights of the day was the demonstration of 5–6 science experiments by the students in the newly inaugurated lab. This powerful display challenged the stereotype that students with visual impairments can only learn theory, proving instead that they can engage confidently in hands-on scientific exploration with the right tools and support.

The inauguration coincided with the Summer Solstice, World Music Day, and International Day of Yoga. Celebrating the theme “সুস্থ শরীর, সুস্থ মন” (Healthy Body, Healthy Mind), the students presented a beautiful music and yoga performance, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental well-being.
The event concluded with Cognizant volunteers contributing their time to create tactile diagrams — a much-needed resource to support the ongoing learning of students with visual impairment.
Vision Empower is grateful to the administration of Lighthouse for the Blind School for their continued support.
This day not only celebrated inclusion but also reaffirmed that when given the right resources and opportunities, every child can shine in science.
