Teacher Instruction Kits

The Teacher Instruction Kits (TIKs) created by Vision Empower (VE) are guidelines for teachers of students with visual impairment on accessible and experiential learning of concepts covered grade-wise in the curriculum. The current database of TIKs covers Math and Science curricular concepts from Grade 1 to Grade 7.

VE follows the tenets of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to create an inclusive pedagogical approach which provides multiple means of engagement, representation, action and expression for the learners. Along with this, the VE TIK uses the 5E instructional model, viz. Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate, to ensure maximum student involvement and interactive learning. The nine content areas of Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) are also integrated into the Math and Science TIKs. This is to ensure that the students reach their grade appropriate educational outcome along with developing special skills on par with their sighted peers. The ECC framework stresses on development of skill areas such as social skills, orientation and mobility, and self-determination. By following the ECC guidelines, the TIKs help the instructors to address the lack of incidental knowledge in learners with visual impairment.
