Empowering Education: Adaptive Device Assessment Workshop organized by ICFOSS

On May 9th and 10th, 2024, ICFOSS (International Centre for Free and Open Source Solutions) orchestrated a significant workshop at Shikshak Sadan, Thampanoor, aimed at the assessment of the adaptive learning devices developed by ICFOSS for visually challenged students. The event drew together a diverse array of experts, educators and stakeholders committed to fostering inclusivity and accessibility in education.
As part of the evaluation team, 2 coordinators from Vision Empower (Jeemol Mathew and Rajeswari Pandurangan) were invited. We had the privilege of assessing the efficacy of the devices showcased at the workshop. Our collaboration with ICFOSS, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signifies our shared commitment to developing teaching modules for these adaptive devices. Together, we aim to empower educators and learners alike, fostering a more inclusive and accessible educational landscape.
The workshop commenced with a Welcome Address by Mr. Shafir Shahul S (Research Assistant, Assistive Technology, ICFOSS). Presidential Address by Dr. Sunil T T, Director of ICFOSS was followed by the Inaugural Address by Dr. Jayaprakash R K, Director of SCERT Kerala (State Council Of Educational Research And Training Kerala). Dr. Jayaprakash R K emphasized the pivotal role of adaptive technology in shaping modern education. Sri Abdul Hakkim, Secretary of KFB (Kerala Federation of the Blind), delivered a compelling special address, stressing the imperative of an inclusive policy framework to ensure equal rights and access for all individuals, particularly those with disabilities. The keynote address, delivered by Sri Yasir A K, Headmaster of Kerala School For The Blind, Vallikkappatta, underscored the importance of effective Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) in facilitating inclusive education.
Dr. Neethu Bhaskar, Scientist B at KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment), provided valuable insights into innovative approaches to teaching mathematics, advocating for the integration of game-based learning.
Sri Jaidev G, Head of Assistive Technology Division of ICFOSS explained the three year journey of the Assistive Technology Division.
The workshop featured sessions dedicated to the presentation and assessment of adaptive learning devices developed by ICFOSS. Sessions were moderated by Sri Yasir A K. These sessions covered a spectrum of educational aids, including maps, periodic tables, fine motor skill development devices, and a device for teaching electron configuration. The assessment experts and ICFOSS team members shared their experiences and insights, fostering a collaborative environment conducive to innovation.
A brainstorming session ensued, yielding a plethora of ideas aimed at enhancing device functionality and educational impact.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Ms. Divya C U, (Research Assistant, Assistive Technology, ICFOSS), expressing gratitude to all participants for their contributions and commitment to advancing inclusive education. In summary, the adaptive device assessment workshop organized by ICFOSS served as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity in shaping the future of education. By harnessing technology and creativity, we can pave the way for a more equitable and enriching learning experience for all.
