NKT College Students Create Tactile Learning Boards for Our Students
On March 20, 2024, the students of NKT College of Education in Chennai participated in a unique activity aimed at creating tactile learning boards. The task at hand was to craft two types of tactile: a world map with latitude and longitude, and a world physical map. These tactile creations were intended to aid visually impaired children in understanding geography, including continent locations, seas, and meridian positions.
Under the guidance of three coordinators from the Vision Empower (VE) team, students enthusiastically dwelled on the task. Each student was tasked with making one of each type of tactile, with and without meridians. The VE team had visited the college a day before to introduce the concept and provide a glimpse into their work.
The day began with a video showcasing Vision Empower’s journey and mission, setting the tone for the activity. An icebreaker game followed, fostering camaraderie and enthusiasm among the participants. Then, step-by-step instructions were given on how to create the tactiles.
Students were provided with the necessary materials by the VE team and were given samples to reference during the crafting process. Oral instructions supplemented the visual aids, ensuring that every participant understood the task at hand. Students enthusiastically participated in hands-on learning activities, channelling their creativity and expertise to craft educational tools with a purposeful impact. The event wrapped up at 2:30 pm, leaving everyone with a feeling of fulfilment and a tangible contribution to the education of visually impaired children.
