Accessible STEM Learning

For children with visual impairments, STEM education has often remained distant - limited by inaccessible classrooms, abstract teaching methods, and a lack of accessible learning resources. At Vision Empower, we believe that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning should be accessible to every child.

Over the past year, our Accessible STEM Learning initiatives have continued to transform how visually impaired students experience education. Through hands-on activities, tactile learning materials, accessible Science Labs, Computational Thinking programs, Digital Learning sessions, and introduction of Assistive Technologies, we work to make STEM concepts tangible, interactive, and meaningful.

Understanding Learning Outcomes through Anubhav Assessments

As part of the Anubhav programme, Vision Empower conducted a learning assessment to better understand the academic progress of students using accessible, tactile learning resources. The assessment aimed to identify learning strengths, gaps, and areas requiring additional support, enabling evidence-based improvements in programme delivery.

The assessment revealed that students demonstrated relatively stronger performance in Science compared to Mathematics. While this indicates encouraging engagement with science concepts, it also highlights the need for greater support in building mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills through accessible and hands-on learning approaches.

Student Readiness & Baseline Assessments conducted showed the following

  • Students demonstrated stronger engagement in tactile and activity-based learning
  • Concept retention improved when students interacted with hands-on materials
  • Many students showed increased confidence in solving Math and Science problems
  • Teachers observed greater classroom participation and curiosity during STEM activities

A Purpose-Built Baseline for Accessible STEM Learning

A key step in Vision Empower’s Accessible STEM Learning work this year was the design of a structured baseline assessment for students with visual impairments. Over the years, it was observed that many students were moving through grades without the expected foundational understanding in Mathematics and Science.

To address this, Vision Empower designed its own inclusive assessment approach after studying tools such as ASER, ASSET, NCERT resources, bridge programme materials, CBSE sample papers, and learning outcome frameworks.

National Science Day 2026: A Celebration That Continued Beyond a Single Day

At Vision Empower, National Science Day is not a one-day event. It is the culmination of months of learning, exploration, preparation, and discovery. Long before the exhibitions begin, students and teachers engage with science through tactile learning materials, accessible models, assistive technologies, and hands-on experiments.

Together, they identify the concepts they wish to explore, build exhibits, and prepare to share their learning with others. While the scale of participation is significant, the true impact lies in the confidence and curiosity displayed by the students.

Throughout the exhibitions, they independently demonstrated experiments, explained scientific concepts, answered questions from visitors, and proudly shared their knowledge.

VICT

VICT is Vision Empower’s Computational Thinking intervention for students with visual impairments, which uses interactive, game-based learning experiences to help students build foundational skills in numeracy, logical reasoning, problem-solving, sequencing, pattern recognition, and collaboration.

Grounded in the Ludic Design for Accessibility framework, VICT makes Computational Thinking accessible through tactile, multi-sensory, and play-based methods that encourage children to actively participate, explore, and learn through games.

The program goes beyond conventional classroom instruction by using accessible games and structured activities that are adapted to the learning needs of visually impaired children.

Through VICT, children are not only introduced to Computational Thinking concepts, but are also encouraged to develop confidence, independent thinking, creativity, and collaborative learning skills.

During the year, students engaged with a range of accessible games and play-based learning experiences designed to build foundational Computational Thinking skills.

COMPUTATIONAL THINKING IN SCHOOLS

Vision Empower encouraged and supported teachers from special schools to participate in the Conference on Computational Thinking in Schools (CTiS 2025), organised by CSpathshala and ACM India and held from 24 to 26 July 2025 at IISER, Pune. Teachers submitted abstracts and presented their classroom practices, contributing to wider discussions on accessible and inclusive Computational Thinking education.

Ahead of the national conference, Vision Empower organised the Regional CTiS 2025 at IIIT Bangalore. The regional event provided teachers with an opportunity to present their ideas, receive feedback, refine their practices, and engage with other educators working in Computational Thinking education.

Several teachers from special schools were selected as finalists for the national CTiS conference, marking a significant achievement in a forum that engaged educators from more than 500 schools across India.

DIGITAL LITERACY

The Digital Literacy sessions help children with visual impairments navigate technology, access information independently, and participate meaningfully in an increasingly digital world.

Through hands-on sessions, students are introduced to accessible digital tools, screen readers, keyboard navigation, typing, internet use, digital safety, educational resources, communication tools, and AI-enabled accessibility tools such as ChatGPT and BeMy AI. Learning resources and audio tutorials were adapted into multiple Indian languages to support wider access and comprehension. The programme also supports teachers and schools in integrating accessible digital practices into classrooms.

Real Life Learning

Through 1,555 Digital Literacy sessions, students with visual impairments strengthened their confidence in using accessible digital tools for learning, communication, and independent exploration.

The sessions helped students become more curious, independent, and willing to engage with technology. Many students began accessing learning resources on their own and participating more actively in classroom and peer interactions.

Pragya programme

Strengthening inclusive teaching practices

Pragya, the teacher capacity-building initiative of Vision Empower, is focused on strengthening inclusive teaching practices for children with visual impairments. Through hands-on workshops, accessible pedagogies, STEM interventions, computational thinking, digital literacy, and assistive technology integration, Pragya equips educators, both sighted and non-sighted, with practical tools to create engaging and inclusive classrooms.

The programme works with both in-service and pre-service teachers, through a structured 16-week training course, helping them move beyond traditional teaching methods towards play-based, tactile, experiential, and multisensory approaches. Teachers are becoming more confident in teaching Science and Mathematics to children with visual impairments and are increasingly using accessible resources in classroom practice.

BUILDING FUTURE EDUCATORS FOR
INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS

For many future special educators, teaching Science and Mathematics to children with visual impairments can seem challenging due to limited exposure to accessible and hands-on teaching approaches. Through Pragya, Vision Empower is helping change this perception.

In partnership with the Department of Special Education and the Rehabilitation Centre at Alagappa University, Karaikudi, the programme engaged 45 B.Ed. students specialising in special education through a 16-week semester course. Participants were introduced to accessible STEM teaching methods, assistive technologies, digital tools, and play-based learning approaches designed for visually impaired learners.

A significant outcome was a shift in mindset. Many participants reported greater confidence in teaching STEM subjects and a stronger belief that Science and Mathematics can be made engaging, accessible, and meaningful for every learner.

Srujan

Developing assistive technology for accessible learning​.​

SRUJAN, Vision Empower’s assistive technology and accessible learning initiative, is focused on making educational content more inclusive, interactive, and independently accessible for children with visual impairments through continuous research and innovation.

Through tactile technologies, accessible reading solutions, audio-supported learning tools, and inclusive digital resources, SRUJAN aims to reduce barriers to participation in STEM, literacy, and classroom learning. The initiative supports students, teachers, and schools in creating learning environments where accessibility is integrated into everyday education rather than treated as an additional support system.

In 2025–26, Srujan was strengthened through the AI Innovation and Inclusion Initiative (AI4I) in collaboration with IIIT Bangalore and supported by Microsoft CSR. The initiative helped Srujan move from standalone assistive tools towards an integrated AI-powered accessibility ecosystem for learners with visual impairments. AI capabilities enable content adaptation, audio translation, text-to-speech, tactile learning, and flexible content delivery, helping students engage with learning resources more independently while supporting teachers, parents, and field teams with accessible learning tools.

A dedicated team of 13 members closely monitors learner progress, addresses challenges faced by schools and teachers in using assistive technologies, and provides timely troubleshooting support. This continuous handholding ensures that assistive technologies are not only introduced in schools but are meaningfully used in day-to-day teaching and learning.

Increasing Learner Engagement with Hexis

Hexis usage data reflects increasing adoption of assistive technology across partner schools. Monthly usage grew from 44.1 hours in April 2025 to 116.4 hours in March 2026, showing a 164% increase in one year. Usage peaked at 163.6 hours in February 2026, indicating that students are engaging more regularly with Hexis for accessible reading and independent learning.

This growth highlights the importance of continued school-level support, teacher orientation, content availability, and timely troubleshooting in ensuring that assistive technologies are meaningfully integrated into everyday learning.

MathPad by Touchétech Labs Pvt Ltd

As part of Vision Empower’s efforts to strengthen accessible Mathematics learning, MathPad by Touchétech Labs Pvt Ltd was introduced across partner schools as a tactile and braille-based mathematics device.

Designed with Nemeth braille notation, MathPad provides students with a structured spatial surface to solve arithmetic, algebraic, and multi-step problems independently. Its use in classrooms supports hands-on Mathematics learning, helping students organise their work, build confidence, and engage more independently with mathematical concepts.

Volunteering for accessible and inclusive education​.​

ANANDA, meaning happiness, is Vision Empower’s volunteer engagement initiative. It brings together individuals, corporate partners, students, and communities to support inclusive and equitable education for children with visual impairments, while creating a meaningful way to contribute to this goal.

Through tactile learning material creation, STEM activities, reading support, awareness sessions, online content support, and school-based engagement, ANANDA enables volunteers to contribute meaningfully to accessible education.

Volunteering at Vision Empower has grown into a shared commitment to inclusion. Corporate partners increasingly integrate volunteering into employee engagement and team-building initiatives, giving employees opportunities to collaborate while contributing to social impact.

Celebrating Commitment Through Tactile Learning

Anil Gowda from Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW) has been a committed supporter of Vision Empower’s work in creating accessible learning resources for students with visual impairment. With a strong personal interest in tactile diagrams, he consistently encouraged and brought together his team members to create tactile learning materials using the resources shared by Vision Empower.

His commitment extended beyond workplace volunteering. Mr. Gowda also took volunteering materials home, involved his family members, and created more than 50 sets of tactile diagrams, reflecting his deep belief in making learning more inclusive.

In recognition of his long service at BGSW, his team members chose to celebrate his contribution in a meaningful way. They created tactile diagrams and handed them over to Vision Empower as a tribute to his dedication. Inspired by his example, the team also decided to conduct a series of self-run tactile diagram volunteering events in honour of his long service.

This thoughtful initiative not only celebrated Anil’s journey but also became a source of motivation for the Bosch team, strengthening their commitment to accessible education for children with visual impairment.
