State-Level Braille Competition!
Vision Empower in collaboration with The Karnataka Welfare Association for the Blind (KWAB) conducted a braille reading and writing and pick and speak competition for students with visual impairment on 28th January 2023 at the National Association for the Blind (NAB), Bengaluru.
This was a State Level competition, for students with visual impairment across Karnataka, conducted to commemorate the 214th Birth Anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the embossed system of reading and writing for the visually impaired.
The day started with an inauguration ceremony setting the context by highlighting the importance of braille.
96 students from 20 special schools in Karnataka participated in the competitions. The competitions were English Braille Reading- Writing- Pick & Speak, Kannada Braille Reading – Writing- Pick & Speak and Nemeth Reading Competition for different age groups conducted parallelly in different rooms/halls.
Along with this, there was a session conducted by Baswaraj sir, a Nemeth code teacher where he taught the students tips and tricks of reading Nemeth (Math Braille) code and motivated them to not be afraid of learning Math.
There were also displays of accessible learning materials by NAB and the Hexis Braille Device by Vision Empower which the children enjoyed visiting after the competitions.
The day ended with the prize distribution ceremony. The first-position winners received Braille watches while the second and third-position holders received leather shoulder bags and handbags respectively.
