When students with visual impairments return home from residential special schools for the summer, their access to accessible learning resources, academic support and structured learning opportunities may become limited. To help bridge this gap, Vision Empower organised summer learning programmes including Hexis reading sessions, accessible STEM camps, online classes and Computational Thinking activities across several regions.
Accessible Summer Learning Across India
In Delhi NCR, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, students strengthened their Braille fluency and independent reading using Hexis, an electronic refreshable Braille device. In Odisha, Telangana, West Bengal, and other participating regions, learners explored science experiments, mathematics, digital literacy, internet safety, and play-based problem-solving. Parents also joined several sessions and supported their children’s learning at home.
A major highlight was Karnataka’s first offline residential Summer Learning Camp for students who are blind or have low vision. The camp focused on bridging foundational mathematics concepts through an integrated, activity-based approach. Students participated in engaging learning activities, while parents attended dedicated sessions and remained actively involved throughout the camp, making it a collaborative learning experience for families.
Together, these accessible summer learning initiatives enabled more than 300 students with visual impairments to continue reading, exploring STEM, practising new skills and building confidence during the school vacation.
